Product Description

Overview – STARTER MOTOR 191-2346 Series

Built to Cummins specifications, the STARTER MOTOR 191-2346 serves Cummins and Onan engines with 12 V starting systems, including generator set applications; the cross-referenced series below covers the most common substitutions.

Parts Characteristics

A 12-volt starter motor with a solenoid-operated drive and a 10-tooth pinion, built to crank a cold diesel against compression repeatedly and reliably. Inside, a reduction gear stage multiplies motor torque so a compact machine can turn a large flywheel; outside, the solenoid bridges the main contacts and slides the pinion into mesh the moment the key turns.

Applicable Models & Applications

Fitted to Cummins and Onan engine installations using the corresponding starter configuration, widely referenced on generator set and industrial engines; related series references include 191-2347, 191-2359 and 191-2534. Confirm tooth count, rotation and mounting flange against your old starter before ordering.

Maintenance & Replacement

Diagnose cranking problems in order: battery state and terminals first, then cables and grounds, then the starter. Slow cranking with a healthy battery points at resistance in the circuit or tired starter brushes; a single loud click with no rotation points at the solenoid or its supply; a whirring with no cranking points at the pinion or drive.

Listen to what the starter tells you: grinding on engagement means pinion or ring-gear tooth damage, extended spinning-down after the engine fires means the overrunning clutch is dragging, and repeated slow starts that improve when hot usually mean the brushes or commutator are near the end.

When fitting the new starter, disconnect the battery negative first, clean the mounting faces and the ground path, torque the mounting bolts to specification, and make the heavy cable connection tight and protected. Reconnect last, then verify engagement sounds clean and the pinion disengages fully once the engine fires.

Respect the starter’s duty cycle – crank for no more than the manual’s continuous rating, rest between attempts, and never crank with the fuel system disabled for longer than the manual allows. Most premature starter failures are heat deaths from cranking marathons the motor was never designed for.

Price Reference (USD)

For planning purposes, allocate USD 200 to USD 500 per STARTER MOTOR 191-2346, excluding local import duties.
