Check the air-restriction indicator on the outlet side of the air cleaner every day on dusty sites, and replace the primary element when the indicator locks in the red zone. Do not replace on a fixed calendar alone – a lightly loaded engine may run far longer, and pulling a good element early only invites dirt into the housing during the swap.
Never wash, blow out or tap a paper primary element and refit it. Wetting the media and compressed air both open the pores, and once dust passes a damaged element it eats compressor wheel and cylinder bore life at speed. Swap in a brand-new element and inspect the inside of the outlet duct with a light – any dust streaks there mean the previous element was leaking.
To fit a new element, shut the engine down, unlatch the canister cover and withdraw the old element. Wipe the inside of the housing with a damp cloth, inspect the radial-seal faces for nicks, then press the new element squarely home until the seal seats evenly around the whole circumference. Latch the cover and reset the restriction indicator before starting.
If your air cleaner carries a secondary (safety) element, inspect it at every primary change but only replace it after every third primary, or sooner if you find dust inside the housing. Always fit the primary with clean dry hands, and keep one spare element in the machine box during dusty-season work.
