Maintenance & Replacement
Follow the air-restriction indicator rather than the calendar. Change the element when the indicator locks in red, and note that a machine on light duty can legitimately run far longer than a quarry machine on the same engine – pulling a half-good element early only opens the housing and the intake tract to dust.
Never wash, blow out or tap a paper element and reinstall it. Compressed air opens the pores and wetting the media destroys the fibre structure invisibly, so the element looks fine while feeding dust straight into the turbocharger. Fit a brand-new element and check the inside of the outlet duct with a torch – dust streaks there mean the old element was already leaking.
To fit a new element, shut the engine down, release the cover, withdraw the old element straight out without knocking dust off its face into the housing, and wipe the inside of the canister with a damp cloth. Inspect both sealing faces for nicks, then seat the new element evenly and latch the cover before resetting the indicator.
If the housing carries a secondary safety element, inspect it at every primary change and replace it after every third primary, or immediately if you find dust inside the clean side. Keep one spare primary in the machine box during dusty-season work – an air-restriction lockout in the morning should cost you ten minutes, not a day.
